Awesome that you're playing with this. :)

I have the same "Problem", I tend to be the type of feel good-dancer. Mostly I avoid the few flashy moves I know because I believe that it is more important to let the follow feel secure. And if the follow has fun and shows then I have fun too. And yes, I look very awkward on pictures:-)
I also avoid jams and contests because I don`t think that I´m good enough for that kind of stuff. It`s true that the flashy dancers attracted me to Lindy Hop but with the experience I got over the last 1,5 years I now only try to find the dancers who seem to have the biggest fun while dancing

I think the main reasons for starting classes with men as leaders and women as followers are 1) that we`ve all grown up taught that men always lead in dancing and women follow (standard dancing tradition, you know), 2) that there are always much more women than men around and 3) that most women just don`t want to lead. Like in one of the other comments told most women find it stressfull to lead. I for myself have danced two times as a follow and find that more stressfull than to lead but I started out as a leader in Standard dance 20 years ago so I´m used to the leading role.
By the way, I don`t know about the USA but here in Germany many women take the leader role (mostly because there are not enough men) and a lot of men dance as follows, too

I get the music, I get the aesthetics of the dance but it is the culture of it here in the USA AND other places in the world that bothers me...I supremely dislike the gender roles and stereotypes that make up so much of the Salsa scene, it may be different down south but out in Europe, parts of Asia, its the same shit. I can't get into it. i dance to let go and look and feel happy, not mask my excitement in a scowl or a mean mug. I wish there the elements of joy in Salsa rang through and all the posturing BS went by the wayside. I do love the heels though...:)
